Historical Heritage

Blountville TN is the 176th largest community in Tennessee with a rich historical heritage. In 1863, during the Civil War, a four-hour-long battle took place in the town. East Tennessee was an important region during the Civil War because of the railroad which runs through here towards Knoxville and South to Chattanooga. During the Battle of Blountville the little town was shelled by the opposite forces destroying many homes and businesses. The Battle of Blountville Civil War Reenactment weekend is an annual event in September to commemorate the historical battle.

One of the oldest historical buildings in Blountville is the Deery Inn located on Main Street. The property was built in the late 1700's and it consists of several structures. The dwelling survived the Battle of Blountville because the then-owner, Gideon Cates, bribed the Confederate and the Federal commanders not to shell the building. Some of the famous guests of Deery Inn include Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Andrew Johnson, Louis Phillipe Orleans the King of France, and the Marquis de LaFayette. Today, the venue is maintained by the Sullivan County Historical Preservation Association and it's available for tours.
